Veterans Disability Benefits Available
There are a variety of veterans benefits that may be available to you and your family, whether you are an injured service member or a surviving spouse. The Birmingham veterans disability attorneys at Norris Injury Lawyers are focused on getting you the benefits you deserve.
These are a few of the benefits available to veterans and their loved ones:
- Disability Compensation
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), disability compensation is a benefit paid to a veteran (or his beneficiary) because of service-connected disabilities (or injuries or diseases that happened while on active duty, or were made worse by active military service). - Pension
You may be eligible for a VA pension if you are a veteran or the beneficiary of a veteran, who is:
- low-income,
- age 65 or older, or
- permanently and totally disabled.
Pension recipients must also have served more than 90 days of active military service, or at least one day during a period of war. - Death (Survivor Benefits)
- The VA pays the next of kin of service members a death gratuity of $100,000 if that service member is killed in the line of duty.
- Dependants and survivors may also be eligible for Death and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) if the service member's death resulted from specific causes.
- Certain entitled veterans, spouses, and dependants may be eligible for VA burial and memorial benefits, which may include burial costs, markers, etc.
- The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) provides eligible dependants and survivors with reimbursement for many medical expenses.
- Education
Under the GI Bill, and updated versions of the GI Bill, qualifying veterans may be eligible for vocational and college education benefits after returning from a given period of service.
