Distracted driving is a concern for many in Alabama. The concern comes with good reason though, considering the Department of Transportation (DOT) estimates that thousands are killed in Alabama Car Accidents caused by distracted drivers each year.
Progress is being made towards eliminating the problem though. The DOT is researching better ways to collect data on distracted driving accidents that could shed insight into these crashes. In the meantime, legislators and law enforcement are combating the problem with laws enacted almost a year ago banning texting and driving in the state.
According to an article from CBS 42 News, the ban is being lauded as a success after more than 146 citations were issued for infractions over the past year. The Alabama Highway Patrol (AHP) issued a total of 133 of tickets.
A spokesman for the AHP, Sgt. Steve Jarrett, explains the law will not be enough to eliminate the problem though. Greater public awareness can be accomplished by parents having honest conversations with their teens about the dangers of distracted driving. Parents should enforce rules against distractions and encourage teens not to engage in the behavior by setting a good example.
The Alabama Personal Injury Lawyers with Norris Injury Lawyers applaud the efforts being made against distracted driving and hope these tips will be effective in preventing accidents in the future.
