A car accident along a highway in Chilton County, Alabama, Saturday evening killed one person and injured four others. News Channel 12 reported over the weekend that the crash occurred just after 6:25 PM in the northbound lanes of I-65, near Clanton.
Authorities believe the driver lost control of the vehicle and crossed over the median. This caused the vehicle to roll several times. Some passengers may have not been buckled in and were ejected from the wreckage. The Chilton County Sheriff’s department confirmed one person dead at the scene of the crash, while one passenger was taken to a local hospital by helicopter. Three others were taken by ambulance to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), safety belts, when used properly, reduce the number of serious traffic injuries by 50 percent and fatalities by 60-70 percent. Also, Motorists are 25 times more likely to be seriously injured or killed when they are “thrown” from the car.
