In an effort to keep Alabama children safer in cars, the Saraland Police Department will be offering free car seat inspection events in the Mobile area over the next few weekends. According to an article released by the Press-Register, the next event will take place on March 24 in the Kidz Kloset consignment shop parking lot located at 3679 Airport Boulevard, near Interstate 65. The inspections are planned to take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Certified inspectors will be on site to examine your child’s safety seat to ensure that it’s properly installed. While many parents believe they may not need to have this inspection done, national statistics have found that 95% of all child safety seats are not properly installed. Common problems include seat belts not being adjusted to the automatic locking position and harnesses on the device being too loose.
Inspectors will also be educating parents on new guidelines established last year for transitioning their children from a safety seat to a regular seat. Standards now call for all children up to age 8 to be placed in safety seats when riding in a car. Additionally, all children under 12 months should ride in a rear facing car seat.
