It’s no secret that getting veterans’ disability benefits can be difficult. Even if you can clearly prove your case to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA), it can take months—and in some cases years—to get a decision. And in many cases, the decision is a denial and the appeals process can take longer than filing a claim. Persistence often pays off though, as was seen by one Alabama veteran.
FOX News reports an 85-year-old veteran of the Korean War had been battling with the VA for 56 years over claims stemming from foot problems he developed during the war. The VA has repeatedly denied the man’s claims for benefits as far back as the 1950s, claiming that there was insufficient evidence of his conditions.
After decades of battling, the VA recently overturned their denial. Citing information provided in a diagnosis that wasn’t considered during his previous hearings, the veteran will now receive $100,000 in benefits after more than five decades of pleading for assistance.
