Tips For Driving Safely in Winter Weather

Tips For Driving Safely in Winter Weather

by Staff Blogger | December 5th, 2017

Freezing temperatures are expected to hit parts of Alabama later this week, creating a chance for snow and ice. Although this winter is projected to be fairly warm, there will still be many nights and mornings when temperatures drop below freezing throughout the state, which can make roadways and bridges more dangerous.

Snow is particularly dangerous for drivers because it can hide black ice, a thin layer of ice that forms on top of asphalt. Black ice is already difficult to see, as it’s the same color as the road itself. Drivers may be completely unaware of its presence when it is covered by snow.

You can reduce your chances of being involved in a crash this winter by following these driving tips:

  • Turn off cruise control. Cruise control is a great way to increase your miles per gallon and maintain a safe and steady speed, but it should never be used when there’s a chance your vehicle will lose traction. If you’re driving in snow, ice, or freezing rain, turn off cruise control and maintain your speed manually.
  • If your tires lose traction, take your foot off the gas and let your vehicle coast to a stop. If your tires lose traction while driving on icy or slick roads, your brakes also may be less effective. Instead of relying solely on your brakes, ease off the accelerator and let your vehicle begin to slow naturally before braking.

At Norris Injury Lawyers, our Alabama auto accident lawyers know that ice and snow can create hazardous driving conditions. But when drivers fail to change their driving habits in response, driving in winter weather is even more dangerous. If you or someone you love was hurt in a crash caused by a negligent driver, we want to help. Call today for a free consultation.
