The list of causes for Alabama car accidents is long, but one of the most preventable contributing factors to crashes in our state is defective vehicle equipment. And recently, airbags installed in more than 4.7 million vehicles were recalled due to defects.
According to an article from FOX 6 News, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is urging owners of vehicles equipped with airbags manufactured by Japanese company, Takata Corp., to have the airbags checked immediately for quality assurance.
Reports indicate the inflators on the airbags are capable of rupturing when the units are deployed during accidents. This can cause metal and debris to be hurled in the direction of vehicle occupants, which could result in serious injuries or death. So far, four fatalities have been associated with the defective parts.
Vehicles affected by recalled airbags include models manufactured by Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, and BMW.
If you are in possession of a vehicle that has been affected by the recall, take it to a certified repair center immediately for evaluation. If you’ve been in a crash where faulty airbags may have contributed to your injuries, it’s important to know that legal help is available as well.
