What Types of Veterans Benefits Are Available?
Whether you are an injured service member or a surviving spouse, a variety of veterans benefits may be available to you and your family. The Alabama veterans disability attorneys at Norris Injury Lawyers are focused on getting you the benefits you deserve.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a variety of benefits to veterans and their loved ones, such as:
- Disability Compensation
According to the VA, disability compensation is paid to a veteran (or his beneficiary) because of service-connected disabilities—or injuries or diseases that happened during, or were made worse by, active service in the military. - Pension
You may be eligible for a VA pension if you are a veteran or the beneficiary of a veteran, who is:- low-income,
- age 65 or older, or
- permanently and totally disabled.
Pension recipients must also have served more than 90 days of active military service, or at least one day during a period of war.
- Death (Survivor Benefits)
- The VA pays the next of kin of service members a death gratuity of $100,000 if that service member is killed in the line of duty.
- Dependents and survivors may also be eligible for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) if the service member’s death resulted from specific causes.
- Certain entitled veterans, spouses, and dependents may be eligible for VA burial and memorial benefits, which may include burial costs, markers, etc.
- The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) provides eligible dependents and survivors with reimbursement for many medical expenses.
- Education
Under the GI Bill, and updated versions of the GI Bill, qualifying veterans may be eligible for vocational and college education benefits after returning from a given period of service.
Levels of Compensation for Veterans Disability Benefits Recipients
If you are awarded veterans disability benefits, you (and/or your surviving spouse and dependents) will receive a monthly cash payment. This payment is tax-free compensation for your service-connected disabilities. The Alabama veterans disability attorneys at Norris Injury Lawyers are here to help you determine if you are eligible for benefits.
Determining Your Benefit Amount
When determining your approximate monthly veterans disability benefit, you must consider several factors, such as:
- your income
- your dependents
- the percentage of disability assigned to your ailment(s).
The VA uses compensation rate tables to determine your monthly benefit amount. Depending on the severity of your disability, your basic disability compensation will range from $133.17 to more than $3,400 per month, but may increase under certain circumstances, such as if:
- you have very severe disabilities or loss of limb(s)
- you have a spouse, child(ren), or dependent parent(s)
- you have a seriously disabled spouse
